Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion perform for children
Mount Kisco, NY – (June 21, 2012) – More than 250 adults and children enjoyed a performance by Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion at Chappaqua Crossing to benefit Mount Kisco Child Care Center (MKCCC).
Before Sarah Lee Guthrie, granddaughter of the legendary singer-songwriter and folk musician Woody Guthrie, and her husband, Johnny Irion, took the stage, MKCCC pre-schoolers performed Woody Guthrie songs for parents and family members. Sarah Lee and Johnny, along with their daughter, then performed songs from their children’s album Go Waggaloo as children in the audience sang along and danced in front of the stage.
“Sarah Lee and Johnny provided such an enjoyable experience for our children,” said Dottie Jordan, MKCCC Executive Director. “We have been listening to these songs for weeks, and to hear them performed live was very thrilling for all of us.”
Sarah Lee Guthrie’s first collaboration with her husband was in 2005 on the album Exploration. Since then, the two have toured extensively both as a duo and as part of the “Guthrie Family Rides Again” tour. The couple released Go Waggaloo, inspired by their two children, Olivia and Sophia, that features songs created to inspire and educate children.
All proceeds from the event will go toward MKCCC’s Scholarship Initiative, which provides tuition assistance to children in need who would not otherwise be able to enroll. Children benefit from the Center’s award-winning programming while parents are able to find and retain employment. MKCCC is well known for its quality, innovative programs including its comprehensive nutrition program, Feed Me Fresh and its intergenerational program, JEWEL.
