Trojans Crowned Class C Champions

Blind Brook Trojans beat defending champions Valhalla Vikings.

The No. 2 seed Blind Brook Trojans are the 2010 Section One Class C champions after defeating No. 1 seed Valhalla Vikings 46-32 Monday.

Blind Brook game MVP Lance Freundlich described the win against the defending champions at the County Center as the "best feeling in the world."

"It hasn't really sunk in yet," he said.

"It feels great," said Blind Brook Coach Mike Welsh.

Welsh said that a lot of people didn't think the Trojan's could do it.

"It's the goal at the end of the season just to get here. I'm just thrilled for the kids," he said.

Valhalla Coach Dave Greiner said his team missed shooting opportunities early on, but that Welsh's team played hard for the win.

"I'm very happy for Mike Welsh," Greiner said. "He deserves it."

The Trojans scored the first two points of the game before the Vikings tied it at 2-2. But Blind Brook led 6-5 to start the second quarter.

Valhalla went ahead 11-8 but the Trojans would later lead 14-10 at the 4:26 mark on a fast break from Robert Winston. Freundlich increased it to 16-10.

Freundlich tied it up at 16-16 before a shot by Valhalla's Alex Pires put the Vikings up 19-17.

Despite the Valhalla lead, Welsh said his team had positioned themselves well at the half.

"We had the game right where we wanted at halftime," he said.

The game was in the Trojans' favor throughout the third quarter as well.

Valhalla gained ground, 28-23, midway through the third before the Trojans began to regain control. Freundlich had a perfect trip to the line after a Valhalla foul with close to a minute left before the final quarter.

Trojan Brent Lavitt cut it down to one, 28-27, with thirty seconds left in the third.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter Lavitt came up big again, scoring a two with under six minutes left for a 33-28 Trojan lead.

The Vikings pulled to within three, 33-30, but the Trojans would go ahead 37-30, and never lose momentum thanks to offensive rebounding and shot production.

The Trojans outscored the Vikings 19-4 in the quarter to finish the game.

Michael Tomasula contributed with four points in less than a minute. Freundlich and Robbie Winston also provided support on several fast break plays.

Despite four missed foul shots and foul trouble for Antoine Saliba, one of the team's star players, the Trojans were victorious 46-32.

Freundlich led the Trojans with 14 points. Antoine Saliba had 10 and Winston had nine.

Blind Brook has reached the semi-finals the past two seasons. The team last won the championship in 2004.
