Police: Possible Police Impersonator Sought
Woman stopped upstate by man possibly posing as a cop.
State Police say they are investigating an incident in which a woman traveling on an upstate road may have been pulled over and questioned by a man pretending to be a police officer.
State troopers said the woman was not injured in the incident, but they believe the man who stopped her was definitely not a police officer.
The woman was stopped about 7:40 p.m. Monday on Leeds-Athens Road in the Town of Athens in Greene County. She told police she was pulled over by a person in what she thought was a police car and that during the incident she and her car were searched — and then she was allowed to leave.
The woman described the vehicle that pulled her over as being a blue sedan with a yellow stripe, with roof lights that were red, white and blue. The suspect
is described as being slender, tall, wearing a gray uniform and a black hat.
State troopers said they are bringing this to the public’s attention due to the fact the investigation has failed to identify any law enforcement agency or officer who made the traffic stop and are treating the matter as a possible impersonation of a police officer.

There was a rash of such "stoppings" for criminal purposes a few years ago. At that time, female drivers were advised to drive directly to the closest police station, rather than stop at night on a dark road. Is that still the current police advice?

That's the best thing to do on any road no matter where you are.

Will the cops think/say you're fleeing or resisting if you continue to drive to the station?
Also- what do you do if you're in an unfamiliar area and don't know where the local police station is?

If you are uncomfortable stopping, I would suggest that you immediately cut your speed significantly, (at night, turn on your interior light), put on your flashers, and 'wave' at the cop. Then, at the earliest area with people, (a diner, restaurant, gas station), then stop. Be aware that the cop may have misunderstood your intentions initially, but I am sure that he will ultimately understand your desire to stop in a populated area in light of this recent press. NOTE: it is important to find a populated area in a 'reasonable' amount of time. (On an Upstate Highway, that might be 3-4 exits. On a local parkway, that might be the next exit...in some areas.)
