Police Charge Rye Man With Driving While Intoxicated
The following arrest information was provided by the Harrison Police Department, it does not indicate a conviction.
A Rye man faces a driving while intoxicated charge after police say he flipped his vehicle while driving near the intersection of Biltmore Avenue and Purchase Street.
Christopher Daiber, 22, of 1 Puritan Road, Rye, was sitting alongside his vehicle with a cut on his shoulder when police arrived at the scene on June 24 at about 1:30 a.m. Harrison EMS moved Daiber into an ambulance. After smelling alcohol at the scene of the crash an officer conducted a field sobriety test, which police say Daiber failed.
Harrison police arrested Daiber at the scene and charged him with driving while intoxicated. He provided police with a blood sample to determine his blood-alcohol content after he was transported to White Plains Hospital.
Daiber was later released and is due in Harrison court on July 12.

I believe 1 Puritan does not seem to be a Rye City address. Is it perhaps Harrison or Rye Town? The post title is less than clear.

I double checked. It is a Rye address.

FYI... it is a rye PO but the actual house is located in harrison, not rye. Puritian road is in Harrison.

FYI..... 1 Puritan pays tax to rye, making it in rye!

Okay, downloaded the Harrison tax roll report <http://www.town.harrison.ny.us/docs/assessor/TARoll-2011.pdf>;. Searching on "puritan", reveals #1 Puritan as owned by Kent and Elizabeth Daiber, paying taxes to Harrison, not Rye. This is an address that has the Rye City zip code, but does not pay taxes to Rye City. Please correct the headline.

Shouldn't the focus be on not drinking and driving instead of where this man's family pays it's taxes?

Connie - if the facts are right, then yes, the focus should be on the behavior. If the facts aren't right, how can you be sure what's being reported as having happened did, in fact, happen? Support for the need of a correction both of the purported offender's residency AND of the title to the article have been available for all of today and yet no correction has been made. I know that there are other things going on, but the corrections required are minor.

Getting the details right is essential in a news story. Otherwise, readers will wonder what else might be wrong with the story. Addresses can be confusing in our area, so it's an easy mistake to make. That said, once a mistake has been pointed out, it should be corrected with a thank you to the person who caught it.

Have seen all your comments and appreciate your diligence and rigorous expectations. The facts of this story, including the PO status of the address, are reported as recorded in arrest record of the Harrison Police Department. I made the editorial decision not to change the headline because, tax rolls notwithstanding, I did not deem it factually inaccurate. As always, we work very hard to ensure the accuracy of our stories and I have no hesitation about making corrections and updates whenever necessary.

So you're saying that the story is based solely on the police report without any fact-checking? If Rye Patch reports that someone lives in Rye and the facts show he lives in Harrison, the correction should be made. Otherwise, it hurts Rye Patch's credibility.

If you go by the fact that he uses a RYE address, than the facts are correct. A man with a Rye address lives at a Rye address! I bet his ID doesn't says 1 Puritan Rye N.Y. AKA 1 Puritan Harrison N.Y.
Good job Renea

No, I'm saying the facts of the arrest are reported as reflected in the police report.
When Mr. Zahm brought the issue to my attention, I personally checked the address and it is listed as a Rye PO address. All Patch reporters and editors are concerned about fact-checking and journalistic best practices. This story was no different.
As I said, tax rolls notwithstanding, I did not feel that was a factual inaccuracy worthy of changing the headline as Mr. Zahm suggests, so I did not. While Patch is not a traditional newspaper, it is an official record, so editors are slow to do things like change headlines, substantial content of a story without good reason and notification to the reader.
The comments reflected that there was a question about whether the address should be considered in Harrison and I felt that was a sufficient footnote about the matter. I let that stand rather than changing the headline which would have disrupted the 'footprint' of the article. I don't think that undermines the reporters credibility- he is an outstanding reporter, by the way, or my editorial judgement.

Renea - I appreciate your efforts. I would not want your job. But in this instance the Harrison police and thereby Rye Patch are wrong.
Daiber has a Rye zip code and that is probably what the Harrison police used when guessing at his place of residence. But there are many instances where a zip code does not align with political and tax boundaries.
Daiber can not vote in Rye. He could not attend school in Rye without paying non-resident tuition. His parents (I feel sorry for them in this situation) do not pay taxes to Rye. Why? Because the family lives in Harrison. They are Harrison residents.
Hopefully, making a mistake on a report about drunk driving related to naming city of residence would not be a material basis for appeal of a conviction.

Getting feedback from the community it actually a very fulfilling part of being an editor. When it's negative, of course, I fret because I want the site to be useful and relevant.
I think the address issue is fascinating. Several Patch sites have similar overlaps- with municipalities and zip codes not always corresponding, so this was not a novel problem. In this instance, since the substance of the story is about the arrest, I did not think it necessary to parse the difference between the address of record and which municipality it actually existed.
All brickbats and bouquets go to the editor...I decided the headline was not inaccurate and shouldn't be changed.
Please keep commenting on all the content. Positive and negative comments alike help me improve the site for the community.

Two more thoughts. Should this article not have been hosted or at least been cross-posted on the Harrison patch site given that it was the Harrison police who responded and the residency issue? Second, if this was about a politician whose residency was being questioned, the actual political alignment would have forced the correction of the title, no? Well, doesn't the residency point tie back to the question of the relevant community? Puritan road - like many others is close to Rye, but the Harrison resident is part of Harrison and that circle of interested parties.

The article is on the Harrison site; it was originally reported and posted by the Harrison editor and I cross-posted part of it here. As for the second scenario, there would be more scrutiny because the focus of the story would not simply be the occasion of the arrest but also the potential ability of the person to effectively serve as a public official- totally different.
In short, reporting local arrests does not reasonably include a cross-referencing with surrounding tax rolls before going to press- or internet. You may find that lazy, I do not. It was neither an error of the police department, nor 'sloppy reporting' by the reporter to document the address of someone who was arrested, nor poor editorial judgement (if I says so myself) to relay the correct information that was part of this incident.
The address, on its face, is Rye. That is not incorrect. That the house is listed in Harrison tax rolls can also be correct at the same time. That matrix, in my opinion, does not demand a change to the headline especially when the feedback stands alongside the story.

Rye cares about it's young people, those who go to school with and grow up with our kids often face the same issues and challenges. There should be no confusion or misrepresentation of where and for whom trouble is occurring.
