In this undated photo, three cars park near Rye Beach. The beach was a go-to destination for locals in the early 20th century. It was filled with bathers, “in swimming suits that hung over their knees,” according to Arlene Hawkin’s book “Read about Rye.” Summer vacationers also came to Beck’s Hotel across from the beach, which was founded in 1887 by William Beck and later renamed Rye Beach Hotel. This photo shows the newly constructed boardwalk. According to the Rye Historical Society, the Rye boardwalk, and most of the major features of Playland, were in place around 1928.
This photo shows the crowded boardwalk and beach. In the 1920's, beach visitors would go below the boardwalk level and into the bath house to change into their swimsuits, since people did not wear their swimsuits to the beach, as is custom today.
This 1895 photo depicts Christ's Church, an Episcopal Church in Rye founded in 1695. The location is 3 Milton Road, though the church's current address is listed on Rectory Street, between Boston Post Road and Milton Road.

Rye, the oldest permanent settlement in the county, has changed considerably since its founding as a town in 1660. Rye became a city in 1942 and is home to nearly 15,000 residents, many of whom enjoy landmarks such as Rye Town Park and beach, the Square House Museum and the Village Green.

As part of our efforts to celebrate all things Rye during its 350th anniversary this year, we've compiled a photo gallery with pictures of Rye past and present.

Feel free to leave comments below about your favorite photo and landmark in Rye. Does your family have a history in the area that is as deep as Rye's? We welcome you to to add your photos to our gallery.

Thank you Lisa and Satta, for these beautiful historic photos and to the present time. Most towns with an interesting history should do the same. Love it and will share them!
