New Rye Brook Rx for Holistic Healing

Blum Center for Health focuses on personalized, comprehensive integration of mind-body-nutrition and functional medicine under one roof in new setting that recently opened in Rye Ridge Plaza

“Physician, cure yourself” is a well- known medical adage. And Dr. Susan Blum has–healed herself, that is.

Blum successfully utilized a technique called Functional Medicine and lifestyle changes to successfully  cure herself of a disease called Hashimotos Thyroiditis, an auto-immune  thyroid condition.

That life-changing experience led her to found the new and innovative Blum Center for Health in Rye Brook. The center may well be the first integrative medicine and lifestyle education center in Westchester. In addition to treating patients with chronic medical conditions, the center also offers cooking, nutrition, mind/body/spirit  classes, cancer prevention, weight loss, medical detoxification and more.

Blum Center specializes in functional medicine; treating the whole person rather than specific illnesses, holistically as well as medically.

Dr. Blum’s Rye Brook staff includes Marti Wolfson, a culinary director of nutrition who conducts classes as well as a breakfast and lunch club. Another key member is nurse practicioner Elizabeth Grieg, director of Mind-Body-Spirit programs including meditation, yoga and a series of educational classes and workshops.

And there is also very definitely a doctor in the house– Dr. Blum, with a passion and dedication for identifying and addressing the root causes of chronic illness through the groundbreaking whole body approach known as Functional Medical.

She practices what she preaches because of her own experience with an auto-immune thyroid condition.

That disease made her take time out from her medical career to re-assess the importance of her marriage (to a hotel chain executive), her three sons (who carry on the family tradition of a Cornell education), her lifestyle (including taking time out for travel, including a recent trip to India) and more, including golf and skiing.

Blum blends her medical knowledge with a healthy respect for viewing her life from a whole body perspective that incorporates all facets of wellness into every breath.

She has been treating, healing, and preventing chronic diseases for the last decade with a whole body approach known as Functional Medicine coupled with established medical techniques. The experience led to her recently opening her own holistic healing center at 34 Ridge Plaza, Rye Brook.

“It’s very common for a doctor to tell a patient to reduce stress, to eat better, or to exercise more to achieve more balance,” Blum said. “However, the sad reality is that not many people know how to actually accomplish these tasks. The Blum Center for Health will literally teach patients the ‘how-to’ part of the wellness equation through a personalized, customized lifestyle program that will literally change their lives.”

Dr. Blum has walked the walk behind talking that talk.

She grew up on Long Island where her father was an attorney,  graduated from his alma mater Cornell, then completed her Internal Medicine training as St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital.

Blum completed her residency in Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC, and is board certified in Preventive Medicine.

Blum also has a Master's degree in Public Health at Columbia University and trained in Functional Medicine at the Institute for Functional Medicine in Gig Harbor, Washington.

She is teaches at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and is on staff at Greenwich Hospital.

Despite her crowded schedule, the mother of three no-longer young kids,  also takes time out for herself.

She starts her typical day –if there is such a thing –with a morning walk with Josie, her Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. She completes her morning ritual with a 20-minute meditation and then sips a nutritional smoothie made with ingredients from her garden.

She loves experimenting in her kitchen with new recipes and with the power of herbs and medicinal properties. She plans family meals in the summer based on home-grown fruits and vegetables. And makes time to play golf, ski, and travel with her husband.

Her down time is spent reading books on spirituality and self- realization.

All of which adds up to the fact that Blum and her staff have  an innovative combination medical and holistic healing center, spa and nutrition-in-the-kitchen program designed to provide clients with the tools to live a vibrant, healthy and happy lifestyle program.

And it is all served up under under one roof.

Their goal is to provide medically supervised, integrated wellness programs focused on creating healing relationships between practicioner and client, hopefully reversing chronic illnesses through nutrition and personalized medicine, and teaching the skills necessary to sustain  a personalized treatment program at home.
