New Running Area for Dogs at Oakland Beach

Beach will have a dog run during a trial period from January to March.

Rye dog owners will have a new designated area to walk their pets near Oakland Beach.

Starting Monday, the Rye Town Park Commission will establish  a dog beach run at the north end of Oakland Beach.

The run will be separated from the rest of the beach by a snow fence that will extend from the low tide area to the wall gate by the beach's entrance, according to a statement the commission released Friday.

The beach run is only temporary and will close on March 31.

The Rye Town Park Commission approved the measure at their meeting in December. The measure was originally proposed by outgoing Rye mayor Steve Otis.

"The goal is to give dog walkers a place where they can run their dogs that will not pose a threat to non-dog walkers," the commission said in the statement. "In the past year there have been several incidents where off-leash dogs threatened or injured adults and young people. Dogs must still be leashed while walking through park areas."

The commission said the beach run would exist on a trial basis, so it could determine how well the initiative worked and whether it should be implemented throughout the entire year.
