At exactly 1 p.m. on Sunday, nearly 100 children from Blind Brook Middle School and the Carver Center in Port Chester began a synchronized dance to music played over the public address system at the Port Chester Super Stop & Shop.

Known as a "flash mob," the group was hoping to raise awareness and funding for the food pantry at the nearby Carver Center, which assists more than 1,300 needy local families, according to team manager Mark Levine of Rye Brook.

"We're using community resources to come together in a positive way," Levine said. "This event focuses on drawing positive attention to get resources and funding," he added.

Blind Brook Middle School 6th grader Margot Schwartz said, "This is part of our Destination Imagination program to help raise awareness. We have so much stuff that we don't appreciate every day."

Classmate Olivia Morrisey added: "It makes me feel happy to help kids get breakfast foods--breakfast is the most important meal of the day."

The music and dancing lasted a little over three minutes a proud parents took videos of the event, and somewhat stunned shoppers looked on and applauded.
