UPDATED: Dog Electrocuted and Killed by Fallen Wire
Dog was killed, but owner survived shock by fallen wire near Locust Avenue
A dog was electrocuted and killed by a fallen wire Thursday afternoon on the golf course of Apawamis Country Club.
Just after 4 p.m. Thursday, authorities received a call from a woman who said her mother, Barbara Minerva, called and asked she send police to Locust Avenue near the country club.
Officers at the scene states a downed power line on the golf course electrocuted the dog. Minerva was zapped when she tried to save the animal, according to the police report.
Minerva had been walking her unleashed 6-year-old black labrador on the golf course. She told police the dog wandered into the woods to investigate a dead animal. When the labrador approached the animal in the wooded area, it was electrocuted by a live electrical wire that had fallen into that area of the woods.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after and notified emergency medical personnel, the fire department and Con Edison.
Bob McGee, a spokesperson for Con Edison, said the dog was killed and Minerva "was shocked but not electrocuted."
"This is a tragic occurrence in the wake of high winds in a storm," McGee said.
It's unclear how the dog came in contact with the wire, McGee said.
"It's not known if the dog came in direct contact with the wire or if the area around the wire was electrified," he said.
McGee said Con Edison sent a crew to the scene and deactivated the power line for about an hour. He said these incidents do happen from time to time, but that Con Edison warns residents to be extra cautious in inclement weather.
"We do advise that in storm conditions that if anyone sees any wire down that they stay away from them," he said.
