Dirty Politics? Robocall Sought to Split Democratic Vote
A robocall to registered Democrats on election eve urged voters to cast ballots for Mark Jaffe, who dropped out of the race and endorsed fellow Democrat Daniel Brakewood after Brakewood won the primary.
Who was behind a mysterious robocall that sought to split the Democrat vote before last week's election?
So far, no one's owning up.
The call was placed to registered Democrats in Port Chester, Rye Brook and Harrison. A female voice reminds voters to vote, and urges them to cast their ballots for Mark Jaffe, "a 20-year resident of Harrison and a concerned member of our community."
The problem? Jaffe dropped out of the race after losing the primary to fellow Democrat Daniel Brakewood, and endorsed Brakewood shortly after.
Jaffe said he was not behind the call.
"It sounds like the Republicans," Jaffe said. "Who else would have done that?"
That's the prevailing opinion among local Democrats, who believe Republicans engineered the call to split the Democratic vote in the race for county legislature District 6 between Brakewood and Republican David Gelfarb.
Gelfarb went on to win the District 6 election by more than 700 votes. Despite Jaffe's endorsement of Brakewood, 321 voters cast ballots for Jaffe on Nov. 8.
Brakewood's campaign said they realize the 321 votes for Jaffe would not have swayed the result, and they do not contest the final tally. But they also characterized the robocall as an example of "dirty tactics."
The call was placed from an 800 number -- the same 800 number that was the source of earlier Robocalls promoting the campaign of Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin.
The phone number belongs to Cherry Communications of Florida, which "provides voter contact services for Republican and conservative campaigns and organizations," according to the company's website.
In an e-mail exchange, Carolee Brakewood asked Carvin directly if he was involved in the robocall. Carolee Brakewood is Daniel Brakewood's wife and a member of Port Chester's Board of Education.
Her husband had already conceded the election and she wasn't seeking information because of "sour grapes," she wrote.
"I am reluctant to let any politician / party get away with dirty tactics without giving them due ‘credit’ for going this route," Brakewood wrote.
In his reply, Carvin said he used Cherry Communications, but was not involved in the robocall.
"I honestly don't know," he wrote.

Dear Dan,
I agree with you that it's outrageous what was done to you in that campaign. My theory is that your own Democratic party played this "dirty trick" on your election. My impression from well placed Democrats in the County was that you were to independent for their way of doing business. Your own Rye Town Democrats could not have been happy with you. My information has it that the Democrats ran Rico Dos Anjos for Supervisor on the orders of former Conservative Chairman Gene Branca. Isn't that the son of Trustee John Branca, you know the guy that you discontinued his lifetime benefits.
My information also has it that Rye Town Democratic Chairman Gary Stracuzzi was irate when the PC BOT could not muster up enough votes for a highly ranked former County Attorney to become Corp. Counsel in PC. My understanding was that you were the critical vote needed for this to happen and you turned your back on them (shame on you).
Why would the Harrison Democrats be happy with you. Your political machine (King St. PTA) took out their favorite son Mark Jaffe. In my humble opinion I believe it was the Democrats who made those calls and they used Cherry Communications to create a smoke screen. Dan, What do you think?
PS: Robocalls don't vote, people vote. Show some class and at least congratulate Gelfarb on a well run campaign. As long as the leadership of the Rye Town Democrats remains the same the Republicans will be in office long after you move back to Maine.

District 6 Democrats must have been brain dead to vote for a candidate that dropped out of the race. They look even more stupid to blame Republicans.

If the Rye Town Democrats were not happy with Mr. Brakewood, as Mr. Terenzi suggests, then why did they bother to endorse him at their caucus in June? Further, why doesn't Mr. Terenzi sign his letters citing his role as (1) a major player in the Gelfarb campaign (as acknowledged by Mr. Gelfarb himself in his thank you e-mail to supporters), (2) Chairman of the Conservative Party (which endorsed Mr. Gelfarb) and (3) an employee of Re-Elected Republican Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin? There is no smoke screen that covers the plethora of connections between Mr. Terenzi, the local Republican Party, and this robo call. Mr. Terenzi, knows this, hence his desperate and immediate attempt to cast doubt / deny involvement. Fess up, Mr. Terenzi... this was a Republican scheme.

Al Dente has your head gone soft? Look at your candidate if you need to cast blame on losing. Are the Democrats little kids by always blaming someone else for their failures?

Dear Al Dente, (gutless wonder)
I never denied supporting David Gelfarb for County Legislator. His record as a tax cutting Town Councilman and his major roots in the Rye Brook community made him the logical choice to represent the district in White Plains.
I believe Mr Brakewood has overestimated his political range. It's one thing to win a Village election in a cumulative voting setting. It's another thing to convince voters outside the King St & Edison School PTA that you are the next coming of JFK.
I stand behind my feelings that the Democrats were responsible for the robocalls pushing Jaffe in the general election. The Rye Town Democrats are familar with last minute dirty tricks. You remember when the tried to deny the Dennis Pilla the endorsement for Mayor a few years back. That entire scheme was organized by the Rye town Democratic leadership because Pilla wouldn't play their game, then a story appeared in the Westmore News that this was really a Republican plot.
Al Dente (Brakewood alter ego), Robocalls don't vote, people do. Gelfarb's record was head and shoulders better than Brakewood's nd Brakewood had his own leadership working against him. Tell Brakewood to look up the words "sour grapes" in the dictionary, I'm sure you will see his picture next to the defintion, now be a man and call Gelfarb on his mandate. Also tell you boy Sullivan that the party is over, there will be other opportunities.

Great play by the Republicans...play a dirty trick, then blame it on the Democrats.
Republicans PLAY THE GAME FOR KEEPS. All's fair, including flipping the blame game back on the victims.
Democrats: SMARTEN UP. Politics ain't beanbag. Conservatives and Republicans INTEND to change this country their way. Whining after the fact doesn't get it done.
Play tough, or get out of the game.

I didn't see anything in the article above these comments implying that anyone felt that the robo-call actually influenced the overall election results. But leave it to Mr. Terenzi and his numerous alter egos to attempt to divert the issue. This robo-call stands as an example of political hypocrisy. We have local Republican & Conservative Party leaders are going off on moral tirades about how they have, or want to, clean up government and use best practices... but they can't even walk 'clean' down the block with their election pieces and tactics. Call me old fashioned, but it seems to me that good, clean, honest government starts with a good, clean, honest campaign. A misleading robo-call without a 'paid for by' tag constitutes a fair campaign breach. If you want to know who the real gutless wonder is, consider the person who made a dirty and misleading robo-call the night before the election and is too cowardly to admit it. Stuy Guy - if your endorsement of cowardly, dirty campaign tactics is supposed to make people feel all warm and fuzzy about the local Republican or Conservative Party, try again.

I looked up political hypocrisy in the dictionary and the first definition listed was; Democrat candidate and /or elected official.

Not going to defend Democrats, but Republicans and hypocrisy come to mind as well. And those Harrison residents want to blame Joan Walsh for everything are delusional. See what you say after full term of her replacement- will promise earth, moon and stars to get in. Wish him best, but a lot more issues that who is mayor. Stick your head in the sand long enough, will believe anyting you want to hear.
