Can You Juice Your Way to Good Health?
A rookie tries Andy's Pure Food's Synergy Cleanse—how hard can it be?
Lose four pounds in three days? Reduce belly fat and bloating? That's what gets my attention while Andy Ozgur, owner of Andy's Pure Foods, in Rye, discusses health benefits of his juice cleansing programs.
When I say I'm not the juicing type, Ozgur offers to let me try his Three Day Synergy Cleanse, which normally costs $150.
With nutritionists, Ozgur developed the cleanses for himself (to treat digestive issues) and a few customers when he opened his vegan restaurant in 2008. "Word spread of its help for diabetes, joint problems, weight loss, and other issues," he said.
Last April to July, Ozgur had 250 detox customers per month. An average month has 100.
"Cleanses give your digestive system a break," he explains "The Synergy is the beginning of changing your diet." Ingredients are fresh and "live," meaning raw.
"If there's anything you don't like, call and we'll customize for you," he said.
Day One—Friday
The night before, a green bag arrives with the day's goodies
7:30 a.m. I poke a straw inside the coconut, and sip young coconut water. It's an antiviral to help clean the kidneys, lightly sweet and refreshing. It's empty too fast.
8 a.m. I'm thinking "bagel," but it's time for the green drink. It's very green. I brace for a yuck factor. Weird. Try again. Not bad. I've never had juice that tastes this…pure.
I call to find out what it is: Joy Blast –apple, celery, kale, ginger, and fennel. "I put extra apple in it for you," says staffer Onor Ozkoc, "to make it sweeter. We'll do that every day." It's for digestion, and it's breakfast.
10:30 a.m. I'm full, but it's Electrolyte Lemonade time. Tangy, meant to balance the body's acid levels mid-morning. Easy.
1 p.m. Two large bowls of butternut squash soup which I'm determinably finishing, fearful of starving. Delicious.
3 p.m. A large salad fills a bowl with half an avocado, sprouts, tomatoes, celery, and greens, with lemon and olive oil dressing. I'm so full, I don't finish it until 5 p.m.
7 p.m. I nurse the white cashew nut milk until 8:30 p.m. Supplying protein and healthy fats, it's a comforting texture and taste, perfect for bedtime.
Day Two –Saturday
I drink the coconut milk and green drink then rush into the city, forgetting my Andy's bag. I have two pizza slices, diet soda, and a candy bar, and feel guilty. That night, I drink the lemonade and nut milk.
Day Three—Sunday
What a miracle fruits and vegetables are! Drinking Green Monster-- a wondrous experience to identify pure taste threads of each live ingredient.
Results
I lost two pounds, and my stomach went down two inches. Wednesday, I get a compliment on my skin—shocking. All week I automatically wake at 7 a.m. without the alarm. I'm choosing water over diet soda.
Hard to believe such a short time could lead me to be so aware of what I put into my body. My body and mind want me to have, well, more juices, which feels astonishing and natural.
I wonder about if I hadn't gone off-program. I'll find out when I do this again. Meanwhile, at lunch, I'm ordering a green juice.
